John Smallwood Obituary: Remembering a Brilliant Geophysicist Who Passed Away Years After Bicycle Accident
The tragic passing of John Smallwood, a 43-year-old geophysicist and Cambridge graduate, has deeply saddened his family, friends, and colleagues. John succumbed to complications years after a devastating bicycle accident in May last year, which left him with life-altering injuries.
The Accident That Changed Everything
While cycling home from work along the A23 in Merstham, Surrey, John was struck by a car making an unexpected right turn. The collision resulted in severe injuries, including trauma to his head, face, spine, and a bleed in his brain. Emergency responders intubated him at the scene before transporting him to St George’s Hospital in Tooting, where he was placed in an induced coma and underwent intensive care.
A Long and Courageous Recovery Journey
John’s injuries were critical. Surgeons performed multiple procedures to save his life, including repairing facial injuries and stabilizing his spine. However, his recovery was long and grueling. He spent over four months in medical facilities—10 weeks in St George’s Hospital followed by five weeks at a neurorehabilitation center in Roehampton.
Despite the extensive care, John faced ongoing challenges, including cognitive impairments, loss of sensation in parts of his face, and difficulty regaining his physical and mental fitness.
A Life of Excellence
Before the accident, John was a passionate triathlete, trombone player, and active parent governor at his children’s school. As a geophysicist, he played a key role in North Sea oil exploration, leading a team at a major oil company.
His dedication to his profession and his family made him a remarkable individual admired by all who knew him.
Family’s Tribute
John’s wife, Suki Smallwood, paused her psychology doctorate to care for him during his recovery. She praised the exceptional care provided by the NHS and highlighted the importance of private rehabilitative support facilitated through insurance claims.
“John was an incredible husband, father, and professional. He fought bravely through his recovery journey and inspired everyone around him with his determination,” Suki shared.
A Legacy of Strength
John Smallwood’s passing is a profound loss to his family, community, and the field of geophysics. His story highlights the importance of road safety and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy.
He leaves behind his wife, three young children, and countless colleagues and friends who will forever remember his brilliance, determination, and kind heart.
